One of the things I get asked often is “What’s the best way to get my message across? How will I know people see it?” In my opinion, having done this for a very long time, the best way is to use multiple ways.
In marketing, we use a goldfish principle that is a bit different from the way Ted Lasso intended it. Ted wanted his player to be like a goldfish and move on quickly from their problems. He wanted them to forget their problems as quickly as they encountered them.
In marketing, we don’t want anyone to forget anything, but we know they will. We know they have to see or hear something 90 times before they’ll click “buy” or pick up the phone to call or take the time to drive across town and walk into your showroom. So we go in with that attitude.
If we go back in time to when paid social first hit the scene, that’s when we started to learn that not everything we post will hit the eyeballs of the people who want to see it organically. We had to get creative (and, yes, we had to pay a little bit… but that’s a different topic for different day).
I have a simple formula I follow each week and if you’ve been here a while then you likely have picked up on it. We incorporate this system for our clients whenever possible, as well.
- We start with a topic. For my business, it’s usually a topic of the week but for others it could be a monthly topic or even quarterly.
- We introduce our client to that topic via one method, typically a longer-form method (for me, that’s typically a Reel).
- Then we take that topic and turn it into other forms of content focused on the same information throughout the week. This could include:
- A blogpost (you’re reading it right now!)
- A series of quick videos for stories
- An e-newsletter
- A graphic carousel
- A photo with a caption on the topic
- A LinkedIn article
- If you’ve mentioned this topic on a podcast, share a clip
- If you’ve helped a customer with this subject, share a testimonial from them
- The list can go on.
It’s not often I pull back the curtain and tell you how we do what we do… but in this case, I really feel like it can help a lot of businesses organize their thoughts and get that goldfish to pay attention.
Be more strategic, and more purposeful with your content and I think you’ll find you’ll “freak out about what to post tomorrow” way, way less!
Hope it helps!
