Just when I thought I could take a weekend off, BOOM… the Instagram breach happened.

Mid-Saturday it happened. Forbes broke the story as far as we could tell and we immediately had to spring into action and get all of our clients’ passwords changed. When you outsource to a team of specialists, that’s what you can expect.

But it was a good reminder. It’s important to change passwords regularly and to make them full of letters, numbers and characters. Don’t use the same password over and over again.

We have alerts on our calendars to change our passwords monthly. With our business manager connected to so many pages and client work, it has to be protected and changing the passwords regularly is a good way to keep them safe.

Other things we think are pretty easy to do and everyone should be doing:

  1. Make sure you have two-factor authorization on. It’s another level of security for your account.
  2. If you can get your profile verified, do so. Yes, sometimes it costs some money. It’s worth it.
  3. Even when you use the recommended strong passwords, keep a list of them. I keep all my passwords in Evernote so I can encrypt them and then copy/paste them when needed.

There are some tools you can use like Last Pass or other password managers. Just be sure you’ve read the reviews and know the risks with these apps.

Never share your passwords and if you have, make sure you change them.

If you’ve ever outsourced to a company and you’re no longer collaborating with them, change your password.

Think about the security of your social media like your home – keep it as secure as possible.
